She also hopes to escape the haunting dreams and the nervous feeling she has that someone is always watching her. Selecting a college in Vermont, thousands of miles from her home in California, Ella is eager for a fresh start. Finally, the nightmares have subsided and besides the obnoxious self absorbed guy, that despite her best efforts, she seems to be falling for her life is falling into place. The Wanderers is an intense supernatural ride with mysterious secrets and eerie characters that lurk in the shadows. One of the first things Ella notices when meeting new people are their eyes. The author uses this to cleverly create fear in readers by describing them as glowing, deep, and penetrating and always watching. The story is fast paced and riddled with one surprise after another. I recommend picking up a copy.

Series The Wanderers #1
My Rating 3 Stars

This is a decent YA Paranormal Romance, if you’re looking for something to fill Twilight’s shoes.
The beginning felt really slow to me however; we didn’t really kick it in to paranormal gear until about 65% of the way through. The beginning feels like YA/NA contemporary girl goes off to college…sorority shenanigans…hot guy takes interest for no obvious reason…crazy slutty best friend…not much else happened for the first half of the book. If I had been expecting a contemporary chick-lit book, that would have been alright, but I was a wee bit disappointed, since I was expecting scary demon paranormal-ville.
I mean, Miller threw us a few bones with the many “Someone is watching me” scenes, creepy memories and possible hallucinations of glowing eyes, etc. But most of it was the main character, Ella, being like “I had such a scary dream”. So not much went on in the supernatural department. I remember checking and re-checking the genres on good reads, just be to sure I knew what kind of book it was.
And then you get half way through the book and it’s like an avalanche.
All of this information is dumped on you, and I can’t help feeling like the next book would be far more enjoyable since you have all the ground work now, and a much clearer sense of where Miller is going with the story. The plot was fairly predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless, once we got into paranormal town.
Ella was one of those YA heroines that isn’t the most annoying character you could imagine, but she does a lot of stupid things. She makes a ton of stupid decisions, especially in the second half of the book. Tristan, Mr. Romance, was super undefined to me. Miller has him sleeping with girls right and left and then he’s like, following Ella around, and then five minutes after working his butt off wooing Ella, he’s sleeping with another girl. I still don’t know how Miller wants us to feel about him. I liked him well enough, but I didn’t believe his devotion to Ella, even when things got serious.
Josie, Ella’s best friend was actually pretty annoying. Aside from throwing herself at guys, she kept pushing Ella to do things she wasn’t really comfortable with. I understand wanting your friend to live a little, but chill out. You should know what kind of things your best friend is or isn’t comfortable with. And if she says NO to something, stop asking. Their friendship seemed a little incongruous.
There were some grammar issues that got kind of annoying, like using the wrong tense of a verb. I think having another editorial sweep through The Wanderers would be helpful. I found these issues kind of weird, because otherwise the writing is solid; Miller writes in a confident, comfortable voice.

I was thoroughly surprised by how much I liked this book! I found myself unable to put it down, completely invested in the characters, and frequently frustrated with Ella (which is a good sign because it means I cared about her and her actions). This book is truly a hidden gem and I'm glad I read it.
The story began with Ella about to head off to college. She's excited to get away from her overbearing parents and have a fresh start after a particularly traumatizing incident that has her family watching her closely for signs of mental distress. Ella attended a party with her best friend Josie and found that Tristan, the cocky boy with the beautiful blue eyes, couldn't seem to stop staring at her. Ella's new life away from her family had her struggling to balance classes, social life, dealing with fighting off Tristan's sly advances, trying to turn down a sorority, and figuring out who she was for the first time in her life.
I loved the characters. Josie was fun, mischievous, and quirky while Ella was more reserved, stubborn, and quick to anger. Tristan was definitely my favorite character because I kept trying to figure him out. He was the life of the party, the popular guy who always gets what he wants, with an arrogance that would make any sane girl cringe. But he was also extremely deep, intelligent, and even a little sensitive when he wasn't aware of it. The conflict and dynamic between Ella and Tristan was enough to keep me on my toes the entire novel.
I knew something strange was going on from the beginning of the book, but I couldn't figure out what it was. The mystery was slowly unraveled and I liked how subtle it was because it was unpredictable. Is this a werewolf book? A vampire book? Are there angels/demons/witches? Other paranormal creatures/things/mixtures? I truly had no idea until the big reveal, despite the vague and subtle hints dropped throughout the text. So I'm not telling. =) While the paranormal conflict was slow, I cannot say the book was slow at all. I was entertained simply by the conflict between the characters, namely Ella and Tristan, and the paranormal conflict was just a lovely addition.
While I enjoyed The Wanderers a lot and thought it was a great story, it had some issues, mostly with editing. There were errors throughout the text misspelled words, misused phrases, typos, and occasional switches from past tense to present, though these weren't terribly numerous or incredibly distracting to me. I felt that many areas of the book could have been condensed and others elaborated more elegantly. It took a long while for the plot to get moving and only certain scenes ended up having a relevance to the plot. Overall, it's not a polished novel. With that being said, I really enjoyed the plot and the characters. The romance and tension was amazing and I felt like I really knew the characters well. I debated with myself about dropping the stars from 4 to 3 because of the issues, but I feel like I enjoyed the plot far too much to give it just a 3.
I would recommend this series to others, as long as they are open to reading books that need some polishing. I will continue the series because I'm anxious to find out what happens to the characters next!
I would recommed this book to all readers. Please purchase today. Characters are great. Can't wait to read another book by Jessica Miller
