The Joy of Cooking SingleVolume Edition Plume Irma S Rombauer Marion Rombauer Becker 9780452252592 Books
I love reading through old books, even if just for the fun of going through something that was writen a long time ago. But the recipes in this book are good as well, and they are explained well. Sure some recipes are not too popular today, at least where I live, such as turtle meat, but its still fun to see what was popular at that time. Still there are some old things that never go out of style. More importantly, most of the recipes are not too expensive; they even include a page for "substitutions and equivalents", which is helpful in many cases. Maybe you don't have baking chocolate but have some cocoa, they give you the quanity of cocoa and the amount of fat to add to equal a serving. Even though they recommend using what the recipe calls for, its good to know you could use it when you are low. I believe this is a book that kept getting updated throughout the years by the children and grandchildren. I think this edition has some added recipes from the daugher. I think the newer versions have some of these recipes and some new ones, though I bet it would not hurt to have more than one version. I love to bake, so I was glad they included a section for pies; and yes I like to eat healthy stuff too (I go through the vegetable and fish section of the book a lot) but still like to bake sweets. Although I do love this book and did want the old version, I would also like to check out the vegetarian version (which I think was writen edited by the grandson). Im not a big meat eater and I avoid red meat but I still wanted all the recipes in this book, as I like the fish recipes and know people who do love a lot of meat; however, I think it is great that the Grandson factored in that some people prefer healthier meatless dishes, Im not sure if he is a vegetarian. All in all, interesting book.

The Joy of Cooking SingleVolume Edition Plume Irma S Rombauer Marion Rombauer Becker 9780452252592 Books Reviews
I had this edition once, but lost it. It has recipes that don't appear in the newer versions. I'm glad to have it back!
this has been my sisters go to how to, what to, and why recipe book for decades. Her's was falling apart and this was perfect.
I have cooked from Joy of cooking for over 40 years. It is the best cook book out there. I remember my mother taking the book and sitting down with it and reading it just like a book of stories because there was always something new to learn.
The Joy Of cooking is a classic. My Mom gave me my first one in the early 1980s and it is falling apart, so I ordered another. You can never go wrong with the recipes in here-they are timeless. Great overall cookbook for novice to professionals!
Great book. Uses scratch ingredients for less expensive cooking.
Classic cookbook and reference guide to all things food related. If you only want one cookbook, this is it packed full of information, advice and suggestions about everything related to foodprep, serving, table settings, menus,.entertaining, tools, pots and pans, etc.
The 1975 edition I purchased is the best of the best, but any edition by Irma S Rombauer would be an excellent choice for yourself or as a gift. Buy one in hard-cover and you'll be consulting it for a lifetime. Buy it for a novice cook and you will enhance their skill with every page they read.
There is not a lot to say about a book that has already been established as one of the must-have classic cook books, so I will just give you my opinion of it and why I like it.
I collect cookbooks, and so many of them are just for fun and entertainment, or for meal planning and flavor inspiration. I love glossy food photos and comparing different recipes for the same dishes.
Most of my cookbooks have never actually been "used" for their recipes or cooking advice.
This book, on the other hand, is one of the few books I actually open when I am in the kitchen and have a general cooking question, and it usually delivers.
This is a great gift for a person just learning to cook, or moving into their first apartment and starting out or even a veteran cook who you know hasn't got this in their collection.
